The Goldenest of Globes
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, ruling the world. |
The Awards year begins with the drunken shenanigans of the Golden Globes, an entirely superfluous ceremony that willed itself into existence, somehow still exists after 71 years, and only became interesting once the coolest ladies in showbiz started hosting it.
Directors Steve McQueen (top), Alfonso Cuaron (left), Spike Jonze (right), and David O. Russell (bottom). |
The people who vote on these things have nothing to do with the Oscars, so no one really gets ahead or behind in the race, except for creating elusive "buzz" with a tearful or hilarious speech. So with 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle taking the drama and comedy Best Picture awards, Gravity taking Best Director, and Her taking Best Screenplay, we got a preview of what a big Oscar night win might be like in the hands of Steve McQueen, David O. Russell, Alfonso Cuaron, or Spike Jonze.
Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence |
Female acting prizes went to Blue Jasmine and the two lady Hustle-ers...
Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto |
...while the male awards went to The Wolf of Wall Street and the two Dallas Buyer-s.
No one terribly embarrassed themselves (none of the film winners, anyway; television is another story), so good job, everybody, and onto the SAG awards!
The main guilty pleasure of this charade is the fashion candy...
Cate Blanchett, Greta Gerwig, Emma Thompson, Meryl Streep |
Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, Julie Delpy, Julia-Louis Dreyfus |
Sally Hawkins, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong-o, Julia Roberts, June Squibb |
Best Supporting Actress nominees: I kinda dig the dainty multicolored detail on Sally Hawkins, Lupita Nyong'o was a dramatic vision in a coral cape, and June Squibb's draped gown was worthy of a queen.
Reese Witherspoon, Helen Mirren, Helen Robbie, Taylor Schilling, Olivia Wilde |
My favorite trend: luscious shades of green, in fabric and in jewels.
Drew Barrymore, Elisabeth Moss, Zoe Saldana, Zosia Mamet, Kaley Cuoco |
I love a good texture, in florals, art deco, or watercolors.
Finally, the night's biggest winner - for awards, for fashion, for comedy bits - is Parks and Recreation. Yeah, this is an Oscar blog, but respect where respect is due!
Rashida Jones, Randy, Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza |
Coming tomorrow...my nominee predictions...
