Globes and Guilds

Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo all won the Screen Actors' Guild Awards Sunday night, and they all won the Golden Globe two weeks earlier.

Since the SAG began giving out awards, 37 actors have won both the Globe and Guild award; 32 of them went on to take the Oscar. (Those who won the Oscar are in CAPS*)

The unlucky few who took both big precursor awards but lost the Oscar: Lauren Bacall, Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Eddie Murphy, and Julie Christie.

So winning both awards pretty much secures an Oscar victory, but there could still be a shocker, a la Juliette Binoche, Alan Arkin, or Marion Cotillard.

Let's also enjoy the fashion show that is the Globe and Guild awards:

It's sort of amazing to see that 2003-2009 (when the ceremony was moved up a month to February), there is almost a direct correlation between the three awards, with very few surprises. But before that, the different awards were spread out to different people. Maybe they need to add that extra month of campaigning time again to bring back the element of surprise.
